Warm-Up Dribbling Drill with Chasing Game
Organization
Setup: Create a 20x15 meter square with players who have a ball in the middle, and players without a ball outside the square.
Objective: The drill begins with ball control exercises, progressing to a fun chase game that encourages dribbling under pressure.
Instructions
Ball Mastery: Players inside the square start with basic ball mastery drills like toe taps, inside-outside touches, and quick turns to build control.
Chasing Game:
On the coach’s signal, the game begins with one player in the middle dribbling.
This player passes the ball to an outside player and steps out of the square.
The outside player receiving the ball now dribbles inside the square, while the previous player becomes the “chaser.”
The chaser tries to tag the dribbler, who must keep control of the ball and find another player to pass to and switch roles.
If the chaser tags the dribbler, the tagged player must do 10 jumps before rejoining the game.
Coaching Points
Dribbling Control: Encourage players to keep the ball close with small touches to maintain control under pressure.
Quick Transitions: Players should be ready to switch from dribbling to chasing and vice versa, enhancing their reaction time and focus.
Decision-Making: Dribblers need to be aware of their surroundings and decide quickly whom to pass to.
Body Position: Emphasize low, balanced body positions to change direction quickly while dribbling.
Progressions
Add More Chasers: Begin with one chaser and gradually add more for extra challenge.
Limit Touches: Restrict dribblers to a certain number of touches before they must pass to an outside player.
Add a Time Limit: Set a time limit for players to make the pass, encouraging them to move quickly.
Questions for Players
"How can you keep control while looking for an open player?"
"How does your body position help you change direction quickly?"
"When’s the best time to pass to avoid the chaser?"
