PASSING DRILLS

10/23/20243 min read

Warm-Up Phase
We begin with a simple two-touch passing drill for 5–10 minutes (5 sets of 1–2 minutes each). Players work on first touch and ball control using both legs. The sequence focuses on:

  • Inside Foot: Control with the inside of the foot, alternating between left and right.

  • Outside Foot: First touch with the outside of the foot, working both legs.

  • Progression: Vary the touches, adding other surfaces like laces or thighs if needed to diversify movements.

The focus is on:

  • Precise control with each touch.

  • Awareness of body positioning for smooth transitions.

  • A steady rhythm to prepare the players technically and mentally for the main session.

This drill not only sharpens technical skills but also warms up muscles in a functional, football-specific manner.

Main Phase Transition

Drill Setup:
After the warm-up, players move into a two-touch passing and coordination ladder drill to combine technical precision with agility.

  • Two-Touch Passing:

    • Players work in pairs, passing with two touches (control + pass).

    • Focus on maintaining a quick tempo, sharp passes, and proper body positioning.

    • Alternate between feet and vary the passing distances.

  • Coordination Ladder:

    • After each pass, players perform a quick footwork sequence through the ladder (e.g., 2 steps per square or lateral hops).

    • Emphasize speed, balance, and controlled movement to improve agility.

Integration:
Players continuously cycle between passing and ladder work. For example:

  • Player A passes to Player B, sprints to the ladder, completes the sequence, and returns.

  • Player B then performs the same, ensuring everyone stays engaged.

Key Coaching Points:

  • Sharp Execution: Firm and accurate passes.

  • Quick Movements: Explosive steps through the ladder, transitioning smoothly back to passing.

  • Body Positioning: Stay light on toes for both drills, always ready to adjust.

  • Communication: Clear cues between passing partners.

This phase builds technical sharpness and footwork, preparing players for the intensity of the session.

Passing Drill with Three Variants

This drill focuses on building technical skills, decision-making, and teamwork through three variations of passing:

Key Coaching Points:

  • Passing Accuracy

    • Deliver firm and precise passes to the receiver's correct foot.

  • Body Positioning

    • Stay open to the field and prepare for the next action.

  • Speed of Play

    • Adjust the tempo based on touch restrictions (two-touch or one-touch zones).

  • Decision-Making

    • Anticipate the next pass and scan the field under pressure.

  • Support Play

    • Move into space after passing to maintain rhythm and flow.

Great for progressing from basic technique to game-like scenarios!

Rondo Drill with Two Zones (6v3)

Setup:

  • Two zones with 6 attackers and 3 defenders in one zone.

  • Attackers aim to maintain possession while defenders try to win the ball.

  • If defenders win possession, they pass to their teammates in the other zone, where the game continues as a new 6v3.

Focus:

  • Passing: Quick, accurate passes to maintain possession.

  • First Touch: Control and prepare the ball for the next action.

  • Communication: Verbal and non-verbal cues to ensure smooth transitions.

  • Reaction: Quick transitions between attack and defense upon losing or winning possession.

  • Possession Skills: Awareness and positioning to maintain control under pressure.

This drill emphasizes decision-making, teamwork, and transitions, helping players improve in game-relevant scenarios.

Passing Small-Sided Game

Setup:

  • Teams: 4v4+4, split into 3 vertical zones.

Rules:

  • Teams must pass through each zone sequentially (no skipping zones).

  • Players are limited to 2 touches to encourage quick play.

  • Ball must stay in a zone for 3 passes before progressing.

Key Coaching Points:

  • Passing: Accurate, firm passes to the correct foot.

  • Support: Move to create angles and options.

  • Body Shape: Open position to receive and pass quickly.

  • Transition: Immediate reaction to recover possession.
