Passing Drill with 4 Combinations | Movement, Timing, and Accuracy

Description:
This passing drill is perfect for developing players' movement, timing, and passing accuracy. With four different combinations—Receive and Pass, One-Twos, Third-Man Run, and Up-Back-Through—this drill builds essential passing skills for effective game play. Set up a rectangular grid with cones marking stations, placing players at each cone and two in the center for receiving and distributing passes. Each combination focuses on different aspects of passing and movement, making it ideal for warm-ups and skill development in small-sided training sessions.

Key Coaching Points:

  1. Body Position: Players should receive passes on the half-turn to allow for quick forward movement.

  2. Timing: Each pass and movement should be well-timed; players should avoid being too early or late in their movements.

  3. Accuracy: Emphasize crisp, accurate passes, as each combination relies on precise passing.

  4. Awareness: Players should maintain eye contact and awareness of other players to coordinate movement and anticipate the next pass.

  5. Communication: Encourage players to use verbal and visual cues to facilitate smooth transitions between combinations.

Progressions:

  1. Receive and Pass: Start with basic passing and receiving, with the middle player playing the ball back to the outside.

  2. One-Twos: Players perform a quick one-two by passing and then moving to receive the ball back.

  3. Third-Man Run: Introduce a third player in the sequence, with the ball passed back before quickly playing it forward to a new teammate.

  4. Up-Back-Through: The ball is played into the middle, returned to the passer, and then played through to another teammate.

Questions for Players:

  1. How can you adjust your body position to receive the pass more effectively?

  2. What cues should you look for to time your movement and avoid arriving too early?

  3. How does communication help you know where the next pass will go?

  4. Why is it important to pass accurately and at the right speed in this drill?
