Drill: Passing and Dribbling with Semi-Active Opponents
Organization:
Set up a 20x20 meter grid.
Split players into two groups:
Group 1: Dribblers (with balls) move around inside the grid.
Group 2: Passers positioned outside the grid, passing to each other around the perimeter.
The primary objective for both groups is to avoid collisions: passers aim to avoid hitting dribblers with their passes, and dribblers navigate to avoid interfering with the passes.
Objective:
Develop dribbling skills under moderate pressure and awareness of space.
Encourage passers to improve accuracy and timing while adjusting to moving obstacles.
Progressions:
Limit Touches: Restrict passers to two touches to speed up play and increase awareness.
Add Passing Combinations: Add one-touch wall passes between passers to simulate quick decision-making.
Switch Roles: Rotate the groups, giving dribblers a turn to practice passing and vice versa.
Increase Dribbling Speed: Challenge dribblers to move more quickly or add directional dribbling patterns.
Key Coaching Points:
Scanning: Encourage dribblers to keep their heads up to avoid incoming passes.
Precision and Timing: Passers need to assess when and where to pass based on the movement of dribblers.
Spatial Awareness: All players should be mindful of where others are positioned to maintain flow and avoid collisions.
Controlled Dribbling: Dribblers should focus on close control and adjusting pace to navigate effectively.
Coaching Questions:
To the players:
"How can you position yourself to avoid blocking a pass?"
"What can you do to make sure your pass reaches your teammate safely?"
"As a dribbler, what clues help you avoid incoming passes?"
To the coach:
"Are players actively scanning and aware of others' positions?"
"Are the passers timing their passes accurately without rushing?"
"Is the drill challenging players to keep their heads up and adjust their movements?"
