Drill: 8v4 + 2 Neutral Rondo with Four Goals
Organization:
Set up a 25x25 meter grid with four mini-goals, one on each side.
The drill is organized as 8v4 + 2 neutrals:
8 attackers maintain possession with the help of 2 neutrals.
4 defenders (chasers) try to win the ball.
When the defenders win possession, they attempt to score in any of the four mini-goals positioned around the area.
Objective:
Train quick reaction and recovery after losing the ball (counter-press).
Develop effective possession in crowded areas with support from neutrals.
Teach defenders to switch quickly from defense to attack and identify scoring opportunities.
Progressions:
Limit Touches: Restrict attackers to two touches to increase speed of play and improve quick decision-making.
Neutral Involvement: Allow neutrals to switch roles with any player on the possession team after set intervals.
Adjust Field Size: Reduce the space to add more pressure on possession players or expand it to encourage wider positioning.
Key Coaching Points:
Immediate Reaction: Possession team should transition into a defensive stance as soon as they lose the ball.
Support from Neutrals: Encourage neutrals to constantly position themselves to offer support and keep possession fluid.
Attacking Mentality for Chasers: Chasers should immediately look to score in a mini-goal once they win possession, capitalizing on the disorganized possession team.
Spacing and Angles: Emphasize the importance of good positioning for maintaining possession.
Coaching Questions:
To the players:
"How can you help a teammate who is under pressure?"
"What’s the first thing you should do after losing the ball?"
"Where should you position yourself to keep the ball moving?"
To the coach:
"Are the players in possession using the neutrals effectively?"
"Is the team quick in their defensive transition after losing possession?"
"Are the chasers identifying open mini-goals for quick scoring chances?"
