Drill: 6v2 Rondo with Chasers Outside (U9-U12)

Organization:

  • Set up two 15x15 meter grids side by side.

  • Each grid is played 6v2: six players in possession and two defenders.

  • Place additional chasers outside of each square who are ready to step in as defenders if the ball transitions or goes out of play.

Objective:

  • Possession Team: Keep the ball away from the two defenders in their grid through quick passes and movement.

  • Defending Team: The two defenders aim to intercept or steal the ball. If they do, they pass it out to the chasers, who immediately step in to take their place.

Progressions:

  1. Two-Touch Limit: Set a two-touch maximum to encourage faster play and quick decisions.

  2. Timed Rounds: Rotate chasers in every minute to keep defenders fresh and maintain a high level of intensity.

  3. Neutral Players: Allow one or two neutral players to support possession across both grids, promoting teamwork and transitions.

Key Coaching Points:

  • Positional Awareness: Possession players should maintain spacing to avoid clustering and open up passing angles.

  • Support Play: Encourage players to constantly move and support the ball, giving the passer options.

  • Quick Transitions: Defenders must quickly adjust when new chasers enter, and attackers must adapt to each turnover.

  • Communication: Players should call for the ball, alerting teammates when chasers are closing in.

Coaching Questions:

  • To the players:

    1. "Where can you position yourself to be an easy passing option?"

    2. "How can you communicate to let your teammates know where the chasers are?"

    3. "As a defender, how can you work with your teammate to cut off passing lanes effectively?"

  • To the coach:

    1. "Are players using space effectively and spreading out to keep possession?"

    2. "Are the chasers pressing with intensity and creating turnovers?”

    3. "Does the possession team adapt well to changes in pressure when new defenders enter?"
