Drill: 4v4+3 Neutrals Rondo (U12 and Up)
Organization:
Set up a 20x15 meter grid.
Split players into two teams of 4 (e.g., 4 blue and 4 red).
Place 3 neutral players who act as support and always play with the team in possession.
The game starts with one team (e.g., blue) in possession, creating a 7v4 situation with the help of the neutrals.
Objective:
The team in possession should aim to maintain control by using the neutral players and quick passing combinations.
Once possession is lost, the defensive team immediately transitions to press and win the ball back while the previous attackers shift to defend.
The drill encourages quick reactions in transition from attack to defense and vice versa.
Progressions:
Limit Touches: Restrict players to two touches to increase speed and decision-making under pressure.
Condition Neutral Movement: Allow neutrals to move only within specific zones or permit them to dribble inside briefly to attract pressure.
Add Scoring Zones: Introduce small scoring zones or gates in each corner, requiring the team to play through a gate to "score" before transitioning to defense.
Key Coaching Points:
Quick Transition: Emphasize instant change in mentality when possession is lost or regained.
Use of Neutrals: Encourage players to involve neutrals to stretch the play, keep possession, and create numerical advantages.
Scanning and Awareness: Players should continually scan to assess space and adjust positioning based on the transition phase.
Compact Pressing: When transitioning to defense, players should close down space quickly, working as a unit to win the ball back.
Detail on the pass: Pass should be on the floor with the right speed and etc.
Coaching Questions:
To the players:
"How can you use the neutral players to help create space during possession?"
"What should your first action be when your team loses or regains possession?"
"How can you use limited touches to play faster and smarter?"
To the coach:
"Are players reacting quickly enough to change from attack to defense and vice versa?"
"Is the positioning of neutrals effective for maintaining possession and supporting transitions?”
"Are players compact in their pressing and creating options off the ball?"
