Drill: 4v2 Transitional Rondo (U12 and Up)

Organization:

  • Set up two 10x10 meter grids next to each other.

  • In one grid, have 4 blue players maintaining possession against 2 green defenders.

  • The goal for the green defenders is to win the ball. Once they do, they must immediately pass it to their teammates in the opposite grid.

  • When the ball transitions to the second grid, the two green defenders join their teammates to keep possession there, while two blue players follow them and become defenders.

  • If the ball goes out of bounds, the coach quickly restarts the play by passing a new ball into the opposite grid.

  • This setup can accommodate 5, 6, or 7 players by adjusting the grid sizes and number of defenders.

Progressions:

  1. Limit Touches: Limit players in possession to one or two touches to increase tempo and precision.

  2. Adjust Space: Expand or reduce grid size depending on the number of players and desired difficulty.

  3. Add Mini Goals: Introduce mini goals in each grid. The defending team must score in the mini goals after winning the ball to fully transition to the other grid.

Key Coaching Points:

  • Transition Speed: Emphasize quick reactions during transitions, both when switching to defense and shifting to support teammates after a successful pass to the opposite grid.

  • Scanning and Awareness: Players should consistently scan the field to anticipate transitions and support options in both possession and defensive scenarios.

  • Defensive Pressure: Defenders must apply immediate pressure upon entering the new grid, while keeping a compact shape to force turnovers.

  • Passing and Movement: Encourage off-the-ball movement to create passing options, and instruct players to position themselves for the next transition.

  • Passing details: Are the pass on the floor, are they with the right pace.

Coaching Questions:

  • To the players:

    1. "How quickly can you transition from attacking to defending once possession is lost?"

    2. "What positioning adjustments can help you support your teammates better after a transition?"

    3. "How can you use limited touches to increase the pace and control of the game?"

  • To the coach:

    1. "Are players transitioning quickly enough to effectively press and regain possession?"

    2. "Is the grid size appropriate for encouraging fast play and challenging possession?”

    3. "Are players maintaining good off-the-ball movement to open passing options?"
