Drill: 1v1 Feints Drill in Wave Form (U9/U10)
Organization:
Set up a 15x15 meter square playing area with a small goal or target area on opposite sides, creating two goals (one for each team). Divide players into two teams, each positioned behind infront respective goal.
The first player from one team starts by dribbling toward the opposing goal, where they must attempt to score. After the shot (whether they score or not), the player must immediately transition to defense, while a new player from the opposing team begins their attack.
The drill continues in a wave-like pattern, with each player switching roles between attacker and defender after their shot.
The small field size ensures that everything happens quickly, encouraging high-speed decision-making and frequent use of feints to get past the defender.
Progressions:
Limited Time for Attack: Set a time limit (e.g., 5 seconds) for attackers to make a move and attempt to score, increasing the tempo.
Weak Foot Only: Encourage the use of weaker foot for shooting or dribbling, improving both-sided skills.
Key Coaching Points:
Feints and 1v1 Dribbling: Players should focus on executing effective feints to deceive their opponent and create space to take a shot with proper distension from them and defender.
Quick Transitions: After the shot, players must quickly react and transition to defense, closing down the next attacker as early as possible.
Close Control: Emphasize maintaining close control of the ball, especially when performing feints and changes of direction at high speed.
Defensive Recovery: Defenders must use their body positioning and speed to close down the attacker and try to force mistakes.
Coaching Questions:
To the players:
"How can you use feints to create space and beat your defender?"
"What is the best way to quickly switch from attacking to defending?"
"How can you maintain control of the ball while performing feints at high speed?"
To the coach:
"Are players using a variety of feints effectively to bypass defenders?"
"Are players reacting quickly to transition from attack to defense?"
"Are defenders applying enough pressure to make it difficult for attackers to score?"
