5v2 Rondo with Reactive Counter-Attack Twist
Organization:
Set up a 15x15 meter grid.
Five players (blue team) start inside the grid, aiming to keep possession, while two players (orange team) act as defenders trying to intercept the ball.
The goal for the blue team is to complete 10 consecutive passes to counter attack.
If the orange team intercepts the ball, they immediately counter-attack and attempt to score in mini-goals placed at the edges of the grid.
Key Coaching Points:
Body Positioning: Emphasize the importance of an open body stance for quick passing and visibility of passing options.
Decision-Making: Players should quickly decide whether to pass, dribble, or position themselves based on the defenders’ pressure.
Reacting to Transitions: Encourage players to transition rapidly between offense and defense, focusing on reaction time after possession changes.
Communication: Promote clear, concise communication to facilitate smooth transitions and maintain possession under pressure.
Progressions:
Limited Touches: Restrict players to two touches to improve ball control and quick decision-making.
Add a Third Defender: Increase defensive pressure by adding another defender, making it a 5v3 for even more emphasis on accurate passing.
Directional Goal: Assign specific areas within the grid where the possession team must move to after completing the passes, simulating a directional attack.
Coaching Questions:
What do you notice about body position when making quick passes?
How does scanning help you anticipate the defenders’ movements?
How can you support a teammate immediately after they lose the ball?
When should you press high versus drop back after losing possession?
